Kids Padel Rackets: A Parent's Guide to Choosing the Right One

Weight, size, shape and grip: how to choose the right first padel racket for your child, plus a quick test you can do at home.

More and more families in the UAE are playing padel together, and children pick the game up quickly. The right racket makes a big difference: an adult racket that is too heavy or too long can make learning frustrating. Here is what to look for.

Why kids need a junior racket

Adult rackets usually weigh around 340–375 g. For a young child, that extra weight makes it hard to swing through the ball, react at the net and keep good technique for a whole session. A junior racket is lighter and slightly smaller, so children can control it and enjoy the game.

What to look for

  • Weight: light enough that your child can swing comfortably for several minutes without tiring.
  • Size: a shorter, junior-size racket is easier to manoeuvre.
  • Shape: a round shape gives a large, central sweet spot that forgives off-centre hits.
  • Grip: small hands need a grip they can close around comfortably.
  • Material: a carbon and fiberglass blend offers strength with a softer, more comfortable feel.

A quick test at home

Ask your child to hold the racket and practise a few forehand and backhand swings. If the racket head drops, the wrist bends backwards or they tire quickly, it is probably too heavy.
